on napping

the world doesn’t make sense
when I lie
on my left shoulder blade.

I turn,
but the afternoon sun seeps
through my lids.
they are a vermillion tarp stretched taut,
maddening; alive

(yes, I would lie on my back,
but don’t you agree that there is something
precarious—dangerous, even—
about not choosing
one side over the other?)
